The Drive Home

It was 7:10 PM and I was leaving school for the day. Last night we had a Read Across America event in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday. As I left the parking lot and turned onto the road, everything looked unfamiliar. This is my first year teaching at this school and I realized it is my first time traveling down this road when it is really dark.

I couldn’t help but look up at the sky and see the stars. When was the last time I saw stars? I lived in a city for the last 4 years and the stars were never there. I turned on my high beams as I turned a corner. No one was on the road. I drove for miles with my high beams breaking the darkness that surrounded the car. The yellow and white lines were so bright against the pavement. The deep scent of a wood stove would come and go as I passed by clusters of houses. I’m so glad to be out of the city.

  1. I love the smell of wood stove when driving on a cold day! When I moved, I went from a direct, multi lane road that was never empty to driving past farms and open land. I absolutely love it!
