It was 7:10 PM and I was leaving school for the day. Last night we had a Read Across America event in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday. As I left the parking lot and turned onto the road, everything looked unfamiliar. This is my first year teaching at this school and I realized it is my first time traveling down this road when it is really dark.
I couldn’t help but look up at the sky and see the stars. When was the last time I saw stars? I lived in a city for the last 4 years and the stars were never there. I turned on my high beams as I turned a corner. No one was on the road. I drove for miles with my high beams breaking the darkness that surrounded the car. The yellow and white lines were so bright against the pavement. The deep scent of a wood stove would come and go as I passed by clusters of houses. I’m so glad to be out of the city.
Love the sensory images in this piece! It is funny how darkness can make everything look unfamiliar.

I like the way you highlighted the small things that a familiar drive in unfamiliar conditions one can notice, if they take the time. Happy Friday!

I love the smell of wood stove when driving on a cold day! When I moved, I went from a direct, multi lane road that was never empty to driving past farms and open land. I absolutely love it!
